The One Thing I No Longer Need for Ministry: A Bible

My parents had recently taken over a small little congregation on the other end of town. How I hated the trip to those meetings. They took so long to get there and the scenery bored me stiff each Sunday. I could surely be sun tanning at home or catching up with my other teenage friends.

One Sunday though I got at least a bit of excitement out of the trip. Shortly after arriving at the meeting, my father discovered that he had left his bible at home! His notes were in it and the trusty leather cover hid a host of secrets and revelations scribbled and marked in it's margins.

Old Faithful

I knew that bible well. Where Dad was, so was his bible. It's dark red leather binding showed scuffs and every single page showed signs of wear. It was his trusty side kick and without it...he could not preach! So while the worship began, he asked me and my Mom (Daphne) to rush home and get it for him.

Well that was when I discovered a flaw concerning myself that has remained with me through the years. As it turns out I have absolutely NO sense of direction! Still new to town, Daphne was counting on me to help her navigate our way back. Well we got home ok, but the trip back was another story.

In my usual flamboyant and over-confident style I pointed out the route. Only catch was, I sent us in the OPPOSITE direction of where we were meant to go. I will give you only one chance to guess whether or not we made it on time.

Well Dad had to preach prophetically that day and we made it back in time for closing prayer.

Forget All This Flipping!

As I entered into ministry myself, my own journey began. There I was. Trusty big bible in hand. Each message began with a prayer, a bible reference and lots and lots of flipping as I and everyone else found the reference. Of course in between were always the whispers..."Does Joshua  come before or after Judges?" or..."What's your version? What page are you on?!"

Like I said. That was the old days. That was before technology! I remember the very first PDA I got. WHOO HOO! What a gem! I could read e-books, write notes and play solitaire all at the same time! Little did I know what a dynamic change this piece of technology would make to my life.

The moment I uploaded my first electronic bible to my PDA, my life was transformed. No more frantic flipping! Things went further. I started preparing my sermons on my computer and copied and pasted all the scripture references in I would need. Man I looked GOOD! There I stood and just quoted out those passages like a star.

Look Mom! No Pages!

Everyone was impressed. So was I. I never looked back. Today you will be hard pressed to find a printed bible in my house. My husband and I and even my kids have electronic copies everywhere. I started the kids on a children's bible, but sooner or later they also started finding that with a simple click, you could access any passage anywhere! Talk about freedom!

So yes, I do not use a printed bible anymore. But I DO have a full copy of many translations, Strong's concordance and the ability to make any notes any time. ( Extra Bonus: I can even do midnight and early morning reading in bed on my PDA and not disturb Craig if he is sleeping)

I have used the bible on my PDA when witnessing, sharing a principle with someone or just to prove I was right in the middle of an argument on scripture. I have it on me 24/7. Certainly a PDA is A LOT less intimidating to someone when you approach them than when you are wielding a thick, leader bound, brick of a book.

We even have the AMI Online Bible with so many bells and whistles you wonder how you lived without it.

So How About You?

What is the one thing you no longer need for ministry? And not only that, are you one that braves the electronic world? As Christians SHOULD we? Or should we stick to the flipping and page bending days?

I dont enjoy flipping my bible any more We are living in a an electronic generation, so to catch up with the times you have to love change

Response from Rev. Ivan Ramos : HHHMMMM....INTERESTING. I ALSO LIKE THE IDEA OF THE PDA, BUT I TRIED IT AND JUST COULD NOT GET COMFORTABLE WITH HAVING IT IN CHURCH AT THE TIME OF THE SERMON. BUUUUT, WHEN IT COMES TO BIBLE STUDIES AT THE HOUSE, THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A LAP TOP OR A PDA. I USE E-SWORD, IF YOU HAVEN'T YOU SHOULD. ITS AN AWESOME TOOL FOR MINISTRY. AND AT A CLICK OF THE MOUSE I HAVE ANY BOOK OF THE BIBLE, ANY TYPE OF DICTIONARY,ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED FOR A GREAT AND SUCCESSFUL BIBLE TEACHING.
WHEN IT COMES TO THE CHURCH, WELL I GUESS I`M JUST AN OLD FASHION KINDDA GUY. BUT I SURELY DONT MOCK IT OR AGAINST IT!! GREAT FOR YOUNG CHRISTIANS. LOVE YOU GUYS DEARLY. GOD BLESS!!

Response from Mary K. : Collette,
I really enjoy reading my Bible online. I have a King James Version CD and I also like E-Sword. Both have Strongs Concordance and E-Sword also has documentaries and study guides. I would love to get a PDA in the very near future. I think it is a wonderful idea as we live in a very electronic world.
Love you all,
May God bless you and yours

Response from Emmanuel : Cool stuff...I remember when I realized that I could have a bible on PC. I then bought a smartphone and am still trying to get a bible on it..

I still find it so close as well to just sit and read the bible...

Response from Kevin Dean : The thing I no longer need for Ministry? I have mostly always only had the bare essentials, thats just me I suppose. During my 22 years of preperation there were times the Lord called on me to minister prophetically, at work, the homeless shelters (when I was being abased) I can never remember a time where the Lord did not move mightly in those days. However, these days I'm able to carry my Biblie (iPhone) with me 24/7. At home its page flippin, out and about its electronic

Response from Pastor Angela : Thanks Collette,

I will get me one of these PDA's. I have had a library of over 30 different Bibles and once I get my PDA, this will make things much easier. I enjoyed this message so much it has been a blessing.

Response from Carol Kellam : I have not even heard of a PDA. So I guess i really need to get technically up to date. I do own a computer, PRAISE GOD!!! I believe that while technology is important especially in this time. I believe there is nothing better than the WORD OF GOD written in text in a leather or pleather bound book. I read everyday, and i enjoy getting alone when i can ( i have four children ages 4 thru 12 years old)and just soaking in the word. Now I certainly would not knock or dismiss a PDA. So when I am blessed to afford one I probably will get one but I will keep my bibles always on my stand because sometimes just seeing it makes me want to SHOUT!!!

Response from Alfredo : I like the digital world and work daily on it. It is faster and has more options. I use some web-based sites/tools including the AMI Bible when digging into the Word. If you really get the WORD within your spirit and heart I guess it does not matter the "CONTAINER" of it or MEDIA in which it is presented (book, CD, PDA, etc)... but when I am tired of seeing an electronic screen I enjoy the former book style :-)

Response from FEM : HI APOSTLE COLLETTE
YEAH AT FIRST KINDA HARD USING AND LEARNING THE LOPTAP AND ON LINE BIBLE BUT IT IS DEFINITELY A GREAT HELP WHEN YOU WANT TO SEND YOUR FRIENDS THE WORD OF GOD WHICH IS EASIER TO SEND THEM WHEN USING THE ON LINE BIBLE. DEFINITELY I WOULD WANT TO LEARN AND USE THE NEW TECHNOLOGY IN OUR TIMES.BLESS YOUR MINISTRY HELPING US A LOT ON HOW TO USE NEW THINGS WHICH MAKES THINGS INTERESTING EVEN TO YOUNGER GENERATION,.

Response from Sam Brown (Prophetic School Student) : No, I havent fully graduated to the electronic world of reading or listening to sermon via PDA. But I do often minister in church settings with my laptop. To be willing to do reading, study, listening and following a person minis
tering from a PDA I would have to get it going through my Blackberry (if I can't do everything through this $400 phone, what good is the phone?). But I'm not sure it will have the memory for the entire bible, plus I'll need a browser (that I recently canceled) to reference Strongs and Bible Gateway online and that makes my monthly cell phone bill $100 plus per month. Eventually this old preacher will catch up to you Holy Ghost "techies". In the meantime I'll carry this 3 pound leather bound Dakes Bible around. I feel like Moses bearing the tablets of stone!!! LOLOLOLOL. Isn't it amazing how the Word has went from being passed on verbally (Adam to Moses). To being written on stone and hauled around (Moses to the prophets), to being written on animal skins... then cloth.... then paper. Eventually, distributed to the whole known world via the highly efficient network of roads and highways throughout the old Roman Empire. Now in modern times by way of radio and TV and now finally, in this last hour, sent, saved and recorded anywhere in the world at the speed of light. We live in a very special time for the Gospel.

God Speed,

Sam

Response from dianna : I guess I am technically illiterate to some degree. The Lord did introduce me to E-sword and I find it a great help. But, never have I tried anything any more complicated. Maybe I need to venture out more. LOL

Response from Tammy : Thanks, Collette this means a lot! I just recently got tired of waiting on others to help me and decided that Holy Spirit was going to help me and we were going to do it OURSELVES! I'd rather try and not succeed than to sit around being scared to try anything new! With Holy Spirit as my partner I am sure to succeed!! Hallelujah!

Response from lisa : Hi,

I believe that I'm called to be a prophet, but really need a mentor. Where should I start?

Response from Dan Dickerson : I still like my Bible for church although the one I attend usually prints all the scriptures used for that weeks lesson up on a big screen. But I'm the type that actually studies while in church. Don't ask me how I do it because I don't have an answer, but while I listen to the sermon the Holy Spirit will lead me to other scripture either supporting what's being taught or disproving what's being taught or sometimes the Lord has a sense of humor and shows both sides of the coin. I like it but it drives the speaker up the wall once they find out what's going on because they think I'm not paying attention to them. Preachers are such an insecure lot, aren't we? It's easier to use my "old school" Bible than an electronic one. I have a blackberry with access to the bible online, but it takes too long too access it in the building we're in. I love studying on my computer and hardly use my hardcover Bible at Home. I use Bible Explorer which has a lot more resources that E Sword but I also like E Sword. I usually read a lot on whatever subject the Lord has me on at the time. I also do a lot of research on the internet because it's like having the biggest library in the world on your computer whether at home or the library or a free wi fi spot. I think technology is great because it gives us the opportunity to learn more and have access to more information. Some may not see that as very spiritual but I see it as a lot of different phone lines God is able to communicate with us through. If He can't get through on line one because it's down He'll use line two or three until His thoughts become our thoughts.

Response from Alfredo : Maybe you'd like this one: www.youversion.com and their mobile versions for different PDAs www.youversion.com/mobile

Blessings,
Alfredo
