When Do You Put Up Your Tree?

Every year I fight with my family. It is the debate of all debates and goes on for roughly 2 weeks before things settle down. The source of this intense deliberation?:

Artificial versus Living

Yes, hard as it is to imagine, but each year I stand up for my right as the mother in the home, to buy an artificial Christmas tree for a change. One of those nice and handy pre-lit ones that come with easy assembly but WITHOUT all the spilled pine needles and endless watering. But noooooo, things just never seem to go my way! The rest of my family, argue vehemently for the live tree.

They love the smell and feel of it. The best part of all for them is being able to go and pick it out. But once again I was on a losing streak with the odds of 4 against 1. So I admitted my defeat humbly and we went out the other night to pick out the tree.

The sparkle in the kids eyes as they sorted through the lot was worth the defeat though and last night was the crowning moment. We have our own little tradition since coming to this end of the world and that tradition is, that each year on thanksgiving, we put up our tree. I grew up in a home where we always started to decorate the house early and I loved it as a kid! Now our kids count the days down until we can do the same each year.

So after sorting through old lights, debating over which colored balls to use and rescuing my young son, more than once, from a well meaning sister handing him tinsel to chew on, the moment arrived! We turned off the lights and all held our breath as Craig said, “are you ready?” As our eyes were all glued to that tree, he plugged it in. Instantly it ignited into a display of colored sparkles and twinkles.

In that small moment I felt such a rush of emotion.

I looked at my daughter’s faces and saw that look of innocent awe. My young son was in my arms and his eyes were open wide, legs and arms flailing excitedly at his very first experience with the lights of Christmas. I look around me and felt a deep stirring in my spirit. In this private family moment, in the midst of us, was the Lord Jesus.

I looked back at the last year and a rush of blessings and memories came to my mind. Somehow I had to think really hard of all the tough things that had happened this year. All that I could remember in this moment was how time and again, the Lord picked us up and took us from blessing to blessing.

You read the news, talk to your neighbors and endure boring conversations with family members that do not know the Lord. And so you are surrounded by negativity, loss, fear and every other bad thing you can think of. It is tough sometimes to block all of that out and to see what God IS doing.

Sure it is easy to see all the wrong that is in the church. It is easy to see the bad things that are happening in the world and governments. But what makes us stand apart as believers? Is it not that we can see the good that God IS doing? So often we are striving to that great goal, that we overlook how much ground we have already covered. Sometimes you just need to stop and look at the twinkling lights for a while.

Sometimes you just have to stop and be a young child in the arms of Jesus and to appreciate His warm and firm hold. So when you cut through all of the garbage out there and all the things you should have, would have, wanted to, needed to, didn’t do … What is left? What is left is every good thing that comes down from the Father of lights.

Count Your Blessings

So what are your blessings? This year the Lord gave Craig and I a beautiful son. We have daughters who are not only the best in the world, but are also a major part of our team. We work with passionate leaders who are not afraid to stand up and be counted. We have our lecturers and staff that just humble us with how much they put into every single thing they do.

We have YOU, always sending in those words of thanks and appreciation at just the right time! We have our partners who are really paying the price and doing the work of God unselfishly. We have spiritual parents who have not only given us their hearts, but their lives as well.

Most of all, we have the Lord Jesus. That no matter what happens in life. No matter what storms come our way, we always end up on top. He is truly the treasure that surpasses all treasure. He is the one that unites you and me.

We might be from different backgrounds, even have some different views to scripture. But this one treasure brings us together with a single powerful understanding. That through the Lord Jesus Christ, every knee will bow. That through Lord Jesus, we have every blessing in Him. That through the Lord Jesus we are a body that is going to take this world for Him. It is this that keeps me getting up time and again.

What Are Your Blessings?

When you think back on this last year, what incredible things jump out? (I would also be curious to know - what are YOUR family christmas traditions?)

There is only one way to change the way we view life and that is to view it through the eyes of Christ. So let us begin our race to 2010 by doing what us Christians do best ...praising our Father of lights, because in Him, there is no change or shadow! (James 1:17)

Response from DAVID WILSON : I personally refuse to accept the ' hustle and bustle' of Christmas. This is the time of the year when I can relax, trust in God to show me His lovely Son Jesus. So to me it is a spiritual renewal time for me and I refuse to allow the church, commerical or anything else "steal this from me".

Response from Yer : Dear Apostle Colette,
As I read and scrolled down your blog, the face of your firstborn came to view and it was as if you had shrunk and became a little girl again; she looks just like you. This reminds me of a promise the Lord made to me; that I would have a little girl who looks just like me and would follow me around wherever I go.

As I scrolled down some more, the complete picture came into view of all your children wrapped up in decoration and under a Christmas tree, and it was clear what to be thankful for.... children. God's greatest gift to the world was a child!

I had a rough start in life and didn't have Christmas trees, presents, .... or "traditions". For most of my life the holidays were a reminder of how uncared for I was, but since coming to the Lord in 2007, Christmas has taken on a whole new meaning. Today I heard Christmas songs on the radio, and I turned it UP! I can't wait to have my own family!

Be Blessed,
Yer

Response from Demon Buster : I don’t put up a tree.
Hi Colette, let’s get down to the bear fatcs,,,,,,I really think your words have impacted me at one time or another. But today I read your blog about putting up a tree at Christmas time…..being that you call yourself an Apostle I thought you might know that Christmas as you celebrate it in not a Christian holiday but worldly one. The tree the trimmings the lights are all of pagan rituals They say it all started a long time ago in Germany and maybe even earlier…A lot to put here so here is a link.

and that’s not the end of it, there’s more….please read on..

But I am sure you know all about this and I am not condemning you…I use to do the same things….as I tried to walk with the Lord over the years I stumbled countless times I cannot count them all, just letting you know where I am in my walk .and a lot of worldly other holidays as well.. like Easter, Thanksgiving as gave them all up…I feel it all about tradition.
Have you ever heard of a man called Wigglesworth..a great man of God I try to model myself after him.

I pray many blessings to you from The Lord

what do you think.

Response from Madelein Dreyer : Hi Collete

I feel confused right now. I grew up in a house with a cristmas tree and have a lot of great memories of the tree. When I took Jesus into my life and never being at home during the holidays, I decided not to go on with the tradition of having a tree. It felt wordly to me, and wanted Christmas to be a celebration of our Saviour's birth. Is a christmas tree then the rigth thing to do? Please help me to understand this better. Is this a personal conviction?

Response from Jessica (Philippines) :
Dear Apostle Colette,

Thank you for sharing your thoughts; your words of Godly inspiring wisdom; the picture of your beautiful children!
Your eldest daughter looks like you.

It has been my eldest son responsibility every year to put up our artificial tree. Our Christmas tree was already set-up as early as November because my children would like to see the tree up for a longer time. Though some would say that the tree is worldy, we think otherwise.

We definitely love to have a live pine tree as a Christmas tree but pine trees are scarce in our country and not to mention very expensive.

Good or bad times, we celebrate Christmas:the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ. It is the season for celebration, reflection and thanking God for all circumstances...

My town Marikina City was one of the hardest hit by typhoon "Ondoy" last September. For the first time in 34 years, the flood went inside our house to our shock! We
prayed in silence while we rushed to bring our things to
I am so thankful that my family was safe and we were not heavily devastated by the calamity.

Walking with God was difficult for me. I have stumbled countless times. I have been in so many impossible
situations as a single parent to six children. Persecution came from own my relatives and neighbors but God provided the comfort and the refuge...

As I look at the Christmas tree nearby, there is no reason why we should not celebrate Christmas.

God bless us all!

Response from Chris Hoyt : Wow, I was just thinking this morning and listening to a friend who was so stressed over all the stuff over the holidays that the Lord let me cheer them up by making Him the focus first so I'm gonna forward this to my friend it could help! Stay wonderful, Chris

Response from Rosethel McPhee : Hi Apostle, Thank you for all of the insirational words of incouragement you send to me each day, may the LORD bless you forever.
About the christmas tree, I use to celebrate it too and looked forward to it but since I came to know the LORD Jesus in a real way and learn the history of christmas and all of the other pagan holidays that the church celebrates, I don't celebrate them any more. Jesus is not really the center of these things, it's all about fun.

Respectfully,
Rosie.

Response from Fineface : Dear Apostle Colette,

I have celebrated christmas right from childhood however, I never understood the full meaning of christmas until I was able to understand my family trdition during this season that I was able to grasp the full meaning of Christmas.

To my family, Christmas was a day of worship in remembrance of the (birth) or first coming of the Savior and Christians around the world celebrate Christmas by attending special church services and giving gifts to one another. In my Family, we use this season to reflect back to see how furtunate we are with refrence to the less furtunate and we were thought to have compassion with the less furtunate by giving them a tangible gifts of compassion. My family has continued this tradition till this day. we normally setup our artificial Christmas tree and all christmas decorations on the 5th day of Dec. each year.

When I came to America, The celebration has become so commercialized that little reference is made to the birth of Jesus rather their main focus was on Santa Claus, reindeer and snowmen to the point that christmas has lost its true meaning. I believe this to be one of the contributing factor why many view Chrismas as being worldly

Response from jane : DEAR APOSTLE COLETTE,

THANK YOU FOR THE TIME YOU AND YOUR TEAM HAVE SPENT IN WORD AND PRAYER FOR MANY. HOWEVER, MY FAMILY AND I NO LONGER CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS IN THE WAY WE USED TO, AS DEEPER REVELATION HAS BEEN REVEALED TO ME. SO THAT DAY WE WILL BE TOGETHER AS A FAMILY ENJOYING EACH OTHERS COMPANY.

MUCH LOVE IN JESUS

JANE

Response from D.Yvonne : Hello Apostle Colette, I can sense your joy and excitement of energy for the Christmas season. It is also my favorite time of the year. Even nature knows that it is the time to celebrate our Savior's birth. My situation changes depending on where I am whether or not I put up a tree since I am single and have been traveling a lot. But now that I working on my 2nd and indefinite year at the same place, I can create more of a pattern. In the past, if I put up a tree then it is usually within 2 weeks of Thanksgiving. The churches that I have attended usually have the decorations up by the Sunday after Thanksgiving. The day after Thanksgiving is when I really feel it is the Christmas season. I just moved the end of October and I was just looking at a tree today, but I think I will wait until the weekend before Christmas and get one on sale since it is only me in the house. I will have a Christmas part sometime in the last 2 weeks of Christmas when I can round up the most ladies so I will have it for then because everyone has to bring an inexpensive ornament as a gift.

I think it is an individual choice whether one puts up a tree or decorations and when they put it up. Many things are traditions and not set in stone commandments by the LORD Jesus like, "love thy neighbor as thyself," etc.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!

Response from Bill AKA Demon Buster : Hi Less
Thanks for the response but I still feel deep in my spirit that having a tree in my home at this time of year is a pagan ritual.
In my life giving up rituals, traditions and customs not only talking about xmass on December 25 and you know it’s not the day the Lord was born so the great historians tell us.
Being born in a stable yes on Dec. 25, I don’t think so.
Let me ask this.
My wife in not a Christian, she wears an amulet around her neck she tells me it brings her good luck the amulet is made into the shape of off a dragon this one is made of jade this particular amulet [dragon] in Chinese folklore don’t have an anus, the thought is any things going in don’t come out hence the luck won’t run out.
I have recently prayed against it and asked fellow Christians around the world to pray with me.
I recently had a dream I did not understand until I asked the lord to show me the meaning.
The Lord was faithful in my dream I saw a women kissing my wife I saw the women had no anus.
I think you can figure out the rest.
I feel the more I shed the world’s views on rituals, traditions and customs the more I draw closer to the Lord.
Look at Moses he was on the mountain forty days with the Lord when he came down he shone with the radiance of the lord so much that the people could not look at him and he covered his face with a vale.

Blessings to you this season
Demon Buster

Response from Demon Buster : CHRISTMAS
Why December 25?

Reply from Colette Toach: My brother, your posts are unacceptable as your own life does not live up to the standards you are trying to set for others.

You do not even have the courage to stop your own (unsaved) wife from bringing bondage into your home, yet you try to tell others how to live?

I must warn you that this is not acceptable to this ministry, and any further posts from you will be removed.

Kind take your heresies elsewhere or you will face the discipline of the Lord for interfering in His work.

Response from SOPHIA : I am amazed about peoples opinion about Christmas for me its just the most wonderful time of the year and I just love it, I live alone but for sure I don't feel lonely at Christmas its all joyous and happiness, people are more nicer with good attitude I feel angels are among the people doing good, people go out of their way to be a blessing to others
Around Christmas I just work with what I have and make the best out of the celebration of Christ I don't care the commercialization of it, Jesus is too big and huge to be sold out

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU ALL

Response from Rose Hodge : I love the Lord so much that I will of course honor his birth, but the "Christmas tree" left my celebrations about 8 years ago. I came upon the teachings of Jeremiah 10:3-5 which enlightened me that the tree has nothing to do with Christ. The amount of money spent on the celebration of the thought of getting and giving has taken away from the true meaning of Christmas. Just like then people go through the celebration and want nothing to do with Jesus. People were cutting down and decorating trees and worshipping the idea long before Christ. So I omit that part, but I celebrate him in the fullness.
